On most, if not all, cigar and whiskey review sites you will see the review done in insulation. It’s either the cigar or whiskey reviewed individually. Well folks, that’s not how I roll.
I smoke and drink at the same time. It’s the perfect combination and while I cannot make a specific recommendation due to the obvious dangers of both, I will tell you that every time I light up a cigar with a nice beverage, it’s pure bliss.
A good friend of mine once told me, “Frank, every cigar is a vacation.” – he’s right. I don’t need an expensive trip, or to sit under the hot sun on a tropical island. I could be standing in a foot of snow, as long as I have my smoke and drink, you’ll see a smile on my face.
Ok, ok, enough about how much I enjoy my vice. Let me tell you about one of my favorite combinations – a glass of Wild Turkey 101 and a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial.
The combination of flavors is amazing. Despite the high alcohol content, which has a story all on its own, this Wild Turkey was surprisingly smooth. I didn’t feel to much of a burn until a little bit after swallowing. And that after taste and burn lasted for literally seconds after drinking. It wasn’t harsh, but it was noticeable…and enjoyable!
I then follow up with a few puffs of my Epicure Especial. I don’t have the most sophisticated palate, so I can’t describe the countless flavors that Bryan Glynn of Cigar Obsession does. Side note and free press for him: I watch him regularly and recommend you do so as well. Phenomenal reviews and seems like a pleasant fellow.
This cigar has a reputation of having a tight draw sometimes, which I admit to have encounter, but more times than less, it’s a great draw. The best way I can describe it is medium bodied, good amount of smoke (which is a must for me), and earthy. The burn was good with only a few touch ups.
It’s a combination I that brings me joy and puts me at peace.
